What Jimmy Garoppolo’s Restructured Contract Looks Like

A lot has happened in the last week for the San Francisco 49ers.

From safety Jimmie Ward missing the first four games of the regular season to the team’s 53-man roster containing a few surprises, some may have forgotten that former starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo signed a restructured contract to stay in the Bay Area Monday.

Okay maybe not everyone, the media has pretty much covered the bases with Jimmy G over the offseason.

Nevertheless, the shocking move to keep the five-year starter sent ripple effects down the roster, including the team cutting veteran Nate Sudfeld, who signed with the Detroit Lions Wednesday. Rookie QB Brock Purdy is listed as the third-stringer behind Lance and Garoppolo, giving them two QBs on rookie-scale contracts for a few years.

But that’s not what we’re here for. We’re here to break down Jimmy G’s new contract and how the number went from almost $25 million non-guaranteed, to a mere $6.5 million guaranteed.

Garoppolo and the 49ers’ brass agreed on a one-year, $6.5 million guaranteed contract with has incentives reaching $15.45 million, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. This means Jimmy G will make a minimum of $6.5 million this season, the highest pay for a backup in the NFL.

The incentives are where it gets tricky, all motivated by game time. Garoppolo gets a $29,000 bonus for being active each game, $250,000 for each game he plays more than 25 percent of the snaps, and another $100,000 for each game won where he appears.

The playoffs are a whole different beast for the backup.

Jimmy Garoppolo would earn $500,000 for each playoff game he takes more than 50 percent of the offensive snaps, $500,000 for appearing in more than 50 percent of the snaps in the NFC Conference Championship, and another $500,000 for winning the aforementioned game. Garoppolo would also earn $1 million more if he played 50% of the snaps in the Super Bowl this season.

A maximum total of $15.45 million for the backup if everything falls into place. The new contract also contains a no trade and no tag clause, allowing Garoppolo to choose his next destination.

Garoppolo has been a winning quarterback since arriving in the Bay, holding a record of 31-14 over five seasons. He has accumulated 11,162 passing yards, 66 TDs, and 38 INTs as a member of the 49ers, taking them to the Super Bowl and NFC Championship in that time.

His new contract is clearly incentivized on making a deep run in the postseason, an idea that isn’t too far-fetched for one of the more complete teams in the league.
