Coming back to the practice field Saturday, two pivotal defensive tackles could suit up for the 49ers Monday night against the Los Angeles Rams.

Arik Armstead and Javon Kinlaw both landed on the injury report this week with lower body injuries, as head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed they’ll be questionable for Week 4.

It’s a foot issue for Armstead, dealing with plantar fasciitis steaming from last week that kept him out of Week 3’s trip to Denver. The Sacramento native went through a pre-game workout to test his foot, eventually being ruled out for the contest.

Unable to practice until today, Shanahan noted that Armstead “looked good”, but that he is still unsure of his status.

Meanwhile, Kinlaw is dealing with an issue in his reconstructed knee. The third-year big man out of South Carolina suffered a torn ACL after four games in 2021, forcing him to end his seasons it was getting started.

It’s a positive step that he made it onto the field Saturday, but local reports indicate he was clearly not at 100%.

“Just flaring up on him. It’s kept him out this week. Hopefully he’ll be able to go,” Shanahan said after Saturday’s walkthrough.

Out for Monday’s primetime game is LB Azeez Al-Shaair (knee), RB Ty Davis-Price (ankle), TE Tyler Kroft (knee), S Tarvarius Moore (hamstring) and OT Trent Williams (ankle). Rookie WR Danny Gray (hip) is doubtful while TE Ross Dwelley (ribs) is also questionable.

Cleared to play, however, is offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill, making his season debut for San Francisco after suffering a significant hamstring injury during the preseason.

Looking ahead to Week 4 agains the Rams, the 49ers have a blueprint of success at the core of their attack: Rush the ball effectively, control the time of possession, win games.

That wasn’t the case last Sunday against the Broncos, conceding more than 30 minutes of possession to the home team in Week 3. San Francisco went on to lose, 11-10.

Losing two of their top halfbacks in the span of few weeks doesn’t help, Elijah Mitchell out with an MCL sprain after Week 1 and rookie Davis-Price out with an ankle injury after Week 2.

The result led to a pedestrian 88 yards rushing for the team in Week 3, not great considering they also lost their start left tackle, Trent Williams.

Nevertheless, Shanahan has found success with gadget players over the years. And while he didn’t confirm if practice squadders like Tevin Coleman or Marlon Mack will see the field against the Rams, he knows the recipe for success is running the rock down the throat of his opponents.

“Yeah, I think when you look at our team when we’ve won the most and won the most consistently is when we’ve ran the ball the best, haven’t turned it over,” Shanahan said. “I think that’s what we’ve done when we’ve always won. So there’s other ways you got to be able to win…but that’s the thing you set out to do.”
