The San Francisco Giants continued to add to its starting rotation on Tuesday afternoon, as ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that right-hander Ross Stripling has agreed to a two-year, $25 million deal with the orange and black.

Stripling, 33, had a strong year in 2022 while pitching for the Toronto Blue Jays as the righty finished the year with a 10-4 record, 3.01 ERA, and 1.02 WHIP while striking out 111 batters over 134.1 innings.

According to Passan’s report, Stripling can opt out of his contract following the 2023 season.

Stripling’s signing comes just 24 hours after the Giants brought in former Oakland A’s left-hander Sean Manaea on an identical two-year, $25 million deal–including the opt-out after 2023.

Giants fans might remember Stripling from his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers during the 2016-20 seasons, a tenure that saw the Texas A&M alumni secure an All-Star appearance during the 2018 season.

The move to bring Manaea and Stripling into the fold seems like a non-coincidence as reports are surfacing that free agent left-hander Carlos Rodón is looking for a six-to-seven-year deal in the $200 million range. Adding two starters over two days likely signals that San Francisco is out on Rodón, especially when you factor in the opposing teams that are in on the 30-year-old.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, the New York Yankees are said to be ready to battle other teams for Rodón and are preparing to make the starter an offer in the near future.

By adding Stripling and Manaea, the Giants appear to have rounded out its rotation for the 2023 season–at least for now:

  • Logan Webb
  • Alex Cobb
  • Sean Manaea
  • Ross Stripling
  • Alex Wood
  • Anthony DeSclafani
