The San Francisco 49ers have a lot of things to figure out this offseason, including the looming contract extension of defensive end Nick Bosa.

Coming off a league-leading 18.5 sack season, Bosa is now in line for a massive extension after his rookie deal runs out in 2024. A game-changing talent, San Francisco thinks it’s about time the Ohio State alum gets his flowers, starting with the Defensive Player of the Year trophy.

“Yeah, I think first of all with Nick, in my heart of hearts, he deserves to be the Defensive Player of the Year in our league,” 49ers’ GM John Lynch said Wednesday. “And I hope that comes his way, because he’s earned that. He’s a fantastic football player, he’s a game-changer of a football player. I should stop now, but everybody already knows all that.”

In terms of the looming contract, the organization knows it’ll need to unload the Brinks Truck to secure his services long-term. Hoping to use similar strategies in years past, talks will begin this offseason with a goal of locking Bosa down sooner rather than later.

While negotiations between agent and organization can be difficult, Lynch is just thankful that Bosa is pretty relaxed about the situation.

“I think we have a really good track record. You look the last five years, working backwards with Deebo and before that it was Fred and Kittle and Trent and Jimmy of getting our players done, but it takes time, it takes patience, it takes persistence, and we’ll have that on our side,” Lynch explained.

“He’s represented by very good and capable people. And you heard Nick yesterday, he never seems to get too excited, he’s pretty chill about the whole thing and I think with that in mind and each of us wanting the same thing, we’ll be able to come to an agreement.”

Lynch’s comments align with Bosa’s sentiment Tuesday, expecting a long process of talks this offseason. Thankfully, he has agent Brian Ayrault of CAA Sports to deal with that.

“Yeah, I’m definitely going to have patience, Probably not going to worry about it for some time. I have an amazing agent who will handle all that. I’ll just enjoy my time off and get ready to roll next year,” Nick Bosa told reporters Tuesday.

Additionally, Bosa mentioned that he’s “not necessarily” looking to be the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL with his next deal. Of course, he’s going to get a substantial pay increase, but his main objective is remaining with the Red & Gold long-term.

“I’d love to be here, for sure…This is a great organization, they treat me as good as you can and I have some amazing relationships here so hopefully,” Nick Bosa stated.
