Since Rick Adelman left the Sacramento Kings, there have been 11 coaches who have tried and failed to bring success to the organization. And in one season, current coach Mike Brown has already surpassed multiple names.

With the Kings finishing with 48 wins in the coach’s first season in Sacramento, Brown has cracked the top 10 of all-time wins among coaches in the Sacramento era. He’s currently tied with Dick Motto and Keith Smart for total wins, with Garry St. Jean, Rick Adelman, Paul Westphal, Dave Joerger and Luke Walton only remaining above him.

Let’s run down the coaches and their records since the last time the Kings made the playoffs:

  • Eric Musselman (2007) lasted only one season, recording 33 wins
  • Reggie Theus (2008) recorded 44 over a season and a half as the Kings’ head coach.
  • Kenny Natt (2009) recorded only 11 wins in his short time as the Kings’ interim head coach
  • Paul Westphal (2010-12) is the longest-tenured coach since Rick Adelman left the team. Over two and a half seasons, he recorded 51 wins.
  • Keith Smart (2012-13) joined the team in November 2011 as an assistant and by January 2012, he was promoted to head coach after Sacramento fired Paul Westphal. Over a year and a half, he recorded 48 wins with the Kings.
  • Michael Malone (2014-15) lasted only one and a half seasons, recording 39 in his brief time with Sacramento.
  • Tyrone Corbin (2015) was named the interim coach after the team fired Michael Malone, recording only 7 wins in 28 games.
  • George Karl (2015-16) joined the team midway through the 2015-16 season. He lasted one more full season, recording 44 wins.
  • Dave Joerger (2017-19) lasted three full seasons, recording 98 wins.
  • Luke Walton (2020-22) lasted two and a half seasons, recording 68 wins.
  • Alvin Gentry (2022) was named the interim coach after the team fired Luke Walton. He only recorded 24 wins.

It’s too early to claim Mike Brown as the best coach of the Sacramento Kings, but if he continues down this path, it’ll be difficult to deny him that title.
