Wood, San Francisco Giants blank Blue Jays to open up road trip

Facing a dangerous Toronto Blue Jays lineup on Tuesday meant the San Francisco Giants’ pitching staff needed to be on top of their game.

Not only did the Giants’ arms deliver, but they held the Blue Jays scoreless during a 3-0 win at Rogers Centre in Toronto–San Francisco’s 13th win over their past 16 games.

Alex Wood–who entered the game following Ryan Walker’s opening inning–picked up the win after posting a season-high in strikeouts (seven) while allowing five hits over five scoreless innings.

Thanks to Wood’s performance and some ninth-inning insurance runs from Thairo Estrada, San Francisco overcame former Giants starter Kevin Gausman’s 12-strikeout performance.

“We’re playing really good baseball right now,” Wood said following the win. “I felt really great tonight. I felt my stuff was really good. It’s definitely something to build on, just excited to get back out there in five days.”

Wood shouldered the majority of Tuesday’s workload, while Walker (one inning), Tyler Rogers (1.2 innings), and Camilo Doval (1.1 innings) all contributed with three strikeouts or more.

San Francisco’s 17 strikeouts matched a season-high, tying June 14th’s output against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Outside of Estrada’s two-RBI double in the ninth inning, catcher Patrick Bailey’s RBI double during the top of the fifth inning acted as the game’s lone run until the final inning.

Thanks to a Giants’ pitching staff that was dialed in, one run would have been enough for Wood and company.

San Francisco will look to keep things rolling on Wednesday night when they hand the ball to Rocklin native Logan Webb.

With another win over Toronto (two games remaining), the Giants can claim its fifth-straight series win dating back to June 12th.
