Giants recall Luis Matos & Joey Bart, place Patrick Bailey on IL

The hits keep on coming for the San Francisco Giants.

Just days after getting Mike Yastrzemski and Mitch Haniger back from the injured list, the Giants announced on Wednesday that catcher Patrick Bailey will be placed on the seven-day injured list due to concussion symptoms.

San Francisco has called up former top prospect catcher Joey Bart from AAA Sacramento, while the team also recalled outfielder Luis Matos after the 21-year-old’s recent hot streak at the minor league level.

The Giants sent rookie outfielder Wade Meckler down to AAA to make room for Matos on the active roster.

Bailey took a shoulder to the face from Cubs infielder Jeimer Candelario on a play at the plate during the bottom of the seventh inning on Wednesday before exiting the game in the top of the ninth inning.

“It was a potential concussion after a slide into the plate,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said of Bailey’s injury on Wednesday. “He took a shoulder to the chin and was a little bit light-headed. We had to get him out of there. We’ll keep checking on him and obviously report back as we get more information.”

Now that the concussion has been confirmed, San Francisco will have to push forward without its standout backstop in Bailey, while the question mark in Bart will return for another stint at the MLB level.

Bart has struggled to find his footing with the Giants thus far, posting a .223 batting average to go along with 11 home runs and 37 RBI over 158 career appearances at the big-league level.

With the River Cats this season, Bart has hit six home runs and driven in 27 RBI while batting .248 over 57 games.

As San Francisco (70-69) continues its slide in the National League Wild Card standings, the Giants will need Bart and Matos to provide a boost to a lineup that has been held to one run or less in four of the past seven games.

Over his past five games with AAA Sacramento, Matos had drilled two home runs and bat .263 with an incredible 1.023 OPS.
