San Francisco Giants name Bob Melvin as team’s next manager

This past weekend, reports surfaced that the San Deigo Padres granted their division rival Giants permission to speak with manager Bob Melvin about San Francisco’s vacant manager position.

Then Tuesday, more reports surfaced that Melvin would likely become the Giants’ next manager.

On Wednesday, it became official. The San Francisco Giants announced in a press release that they’ve named Melvin as the team’s 39th manager.

“Bob Melvin is one of the most well-respected managers and people in baseball today,” Giants President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi sad in the press release. “He brings a wealth of baseball acumen from all of his experience in the game, first as player and then over the last 20+ years as a manager or coach. Having worked with Bob in the past I have seen firsthand the positive impacts that he has on a team and an organization. I’m thrilled to be working with him once again and can’t wait to get started.”

The 61-year-old Bay Area native just completed his 20th season as an MLB manager. Along with stops in Oakland and San Diego, he’s managed the Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks. In his 20 years as a manager, he’s won the Manager of the Year award three times, once in Arizona in 2007 and twice in Oakland in 2012 and 2018.

“I could not be more excited to come back to the Bay Area and manage this great organization,” manager Bob Melvin said in the press release. “I’d like to thank Greg Johnson, Farhan Zaidi and Larry Baer for giving me the opportunity to add another chapter to my Giants career. This is a tremendous opportunity and a great responsibility to lead this organization and I’m eager to get started.”

Bob Melvin return to the Bay Area?

As Bob Melvin joins the Giants, he returns to a very familiar setting – the Bay Area.

A Palo Alto native who attended high school and college (Berkeley) in the Bay Area, Melvin spent 10 seasons as the manager of the Oakland Athletics before taking a job with San Diego in 2022. After taking over for Bob Geren in the middle of the 2011 season, Melvin posted an 853-764 (.528) record for Oakland over 1,617 games from 2011 through 2021.

The A’s secured three American League West championships (2012, 2013, 2020) and qualified for the postseason six times over Melvin’s 11 seasons as manager.
