The San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs are two of the more historic franchises in the NFL. Now, the 49ers and Chiefs are set to face off in Super Bowl 58 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sunday, February 11th.

In the history of their respective organizations, San Francisco has accumulated five Super Bowl wins compared to three for Kansas City. However, there is some notable variance in the recency of those wins, with Patrick Mahomes leading his team to two in the last four seasons.

His first, and the team’s second in history, came in a 49ers Chiefs Super Bowl matchup four seasons ago. Plenty has changed for both rosters since then, but it’s worth revisiting what transpired in that season finale.

The Niners settled for a Robbie Gould 38-yard field goal on their first drive, to which the Chiefs responded with a touchdown on the other end.

Bashaud Breeland intercepted San Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo their next time down the field, eventually leading to a 10-3 lead for Kansas City in the first 49ers Chiefs Super Bowl.

One more Kyle Juszczyk touchdown and Gould kick field goal later, the Niners led 20-10 going into the third quarter. Andy Reid and his Chiefs managed to tally 21 points in the final 6:13 of regulation en route to a 31-20 victory in the 49ers Chiefs Super Bowl four years ago.

Many will remember the late missed connection between Garoppolo and receiver Emmanuel Sanders that could have changed the tide back in San Francisco’s favor.

While Mahomes still has Travis Kelce and phenomenal head coach Reid on his side, the Chiefs are without star receiver Tyreek Hill (now with the Miami Dolphins), who racked up 105 yards on nine catches in Super Bowl 54.

Stats from previous 49ers Chiefs Super Bowl:

  • Jimmy Garoppolo: 20/31 for 219 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions, 42.6 QBR
  • Raheem Mostert: 12 carries for 58 yards, one touchdown
  • Deebo Samuel: Three carries for 58 yards & five receptions for 39 yards (97 total yards)
  • Patrick Mahomes: 26/42 for 286 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions, 63.5 QBR
  • Damien Williams: 17 carries for 104 yards, one touchdown
  • Tyreek Hill: Nine receptions for 105 yards
  • Sammy Watkins: Five receptions for 98 yards

Both rosters have had notable changes since their matchup four seasons ago. San Francisco has Brocky Purdy in at quarterback, with new weapons Brandon Aiyuk and running back Christian McCaffrey to work with.

Kansas City is relying heavily on the Mahomes-Kelce connection offensively, along with their seemingly improved defense. While there are plenty of new faces taking place, we’ll see how different the upcoming 49ers Chiefs Super Bowl finishes in Las Vegas.
