News about San Francisco Giants pitchers hasn’t been great so far this spring training.

First, rookie right-hander Keaton Winn, who is currently projected to be in Bob Melvin’s rotation, was temporarily shut down due to right elbow inflammation. News came out Thursday from Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area that Winn will return to the hill this weekend for a bullpen session.

But two steps forward, one step back for the Giants, who also learned that right-hander Tristan Beck will be unavailable come opening day. According to the team, Beck was diagnosed with “an aneurysm in the upper part of his pitching arm.” The 27-year-old pitcher was sent to Stanford to see a vascular specialist after his hand felt cold following some throwing sessions at spring training.

Beck’s injury is another hit to the Giants’ rotation. Former Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray, who the team acquired earlier this year via trade, is already on the shelf until July as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.

As a rookie last season, Tristan Beck went 3-3 with a 3.92 ERA.

The Giants could go the free-agency route, with left-handers Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery still available. Both men have reportedly been linked to San Francisco and the latest injury news could help spur the team to sign one or the other.
