Dusty Baker is being honored for his 56 years as a combined player, coach and manager in Major League Baseball.

Baseball Digest announced they will present Baker with its Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes “a living individual whose career has been spent in or around Major League Baseball and who has made significant contributions to the game.”

The award debuted in 2021 and has been bestowed upon Willie Mays, Vin Scully and Joe Torre.

“Receiving this award is a tremendous honor,” Dusty Baker said in a press release. “I never thought that I’d be in the class of the people that received this award. I know that my late mom and dad would be proud of me. This is really special.”

The 74-year-old Baker announced his retirement as an MLB manager last October after 26 seasons managing multiple clubs. Shortly after that though, he returned to the San Francisco Giants, as a special assistant to president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi.

Dusty Baker won his first World Series as a manager in 2022 with Houston. He previously appeared in the World Series as a manager with the San Francisco Giants in 2002. In 26 seasons as a manager for the Astros, Giants Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals, Baker has amassed 2,183 regular-season wins.

Before he became a manager, Baker was an outfielder from 1968 through 1986. He played for the Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, and Oakland Athletics.

Dusty Baker and his family moved to the Sacramento area when he was in his teens. In 2010, Baker was inducted into the Sac-Joaquin Section’s Hall of Fame because he was a stand-out athlete at Del Campo High School. Baker still has ties in the Sacramento region. The Baker Family Wines is located in West Sacramento.
