The International Olympic Committee was overturned on a doping ban on 28 Russian athletes, CNN reports.
The Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld appeals made by the athletes after they were banned from competing for life. The initial ban came following doping violations during the 2014 Sochi Winter Games.
This new overturn allows the athletes to compete in South Korea, and reinstates their results from 2014. They site “insufficient evidence to show they had broken the rules” for the overturns.
In 11 separate cases, the Games reduced lifetime bans to a ban for 2018 alone.
In those cases, they admit doping took place but ruled a lifetime ban was too severe.
