Report: SF Giants could look to sign Willy Adames this offseason

According to one MLB insider, the San Francisco Giants could pose as a threat to land free agent shortstop Willy Adames this offseason.

The San Francisco Giants have struggled to find consistency out of the shortstop position. Could Willy Adames be the solution to that problem?

Once franchise legend Brandon Crawford showed signs of slowing down in 2022, the Giants nearly signed All-Star shortstop Carlos Correa before the 2023 season–but we all know what happened there. After backing out of signing Correa, San Francisco has shuffled through several options at short over the past two seasons.

Nick Ahmed, Paul DeJong, former top prospect Marco Luciano–who is now transitioning to an outfield role–and Tyler Fitzgerald have seen time at short over the past two seasons, with the latter proving as the most stable choice in that time frame.

While Fitzgerald has shown flashes at the shortstop position, especially at the plate (15 HR and a .280 average over 96 games), new Giants president Buster Posey could look to make a splash this winter.

Fitzgerald, who has logged innings in the outfield, second base, and third base during his minor league days, could slide back into a utility role if San Francisco were to bring in a full-time shortstop this offseason. Soon-to-be free agent Willy Adames could fit the bill for the Giants, says MLB insider Jon Heyman:

Willy Adames, spiritual leader of Brew Crew, has been target of Dodgers, Braves and Giants in past and they’re seen as among possible landing spots. Brewers would love to keep him but understand he’s probably out of price range. LA, with Friedman/Rays link, possible favorite?

More on free agent shortstop Willy Adames

Adames, 29, just finished a career year with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2024, during which the shortstop batted .251 and had 32 home runs (career-high), 112 RBI (career-high), 74 walks (career-high), and 21 stolen bases (career high) over 161 games.

While adding a player of Adames’ caliber would surely help a Giants team that finished with an 80-82 record, money will be at the forefront of conversations surrounding the free agent. Reports indicate that Adames will be seeking around $200 million from interested teams this winter, meaning that San Francisco–nearly one year removed from a largely disappointing spending spree last offseason–will have to open up the checkbook once again.

Is Adames the big-ticket-free agent that Posey and company will target, or could they prioritize pitching and look to bring back reigning Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell? Baltimore Orioles ace Corbin Burnes will also be on the market this offseason, as will options like Nathan Eovaldi, Justin Verlander, and more.

We’ll see if Adames fits Posey’s vision for this roster, but stability at the shortstop position is a must for San Francisco, whether the solution is found internally or externally.
