Former A’s reliever Lou Trivino lands Opening Day roster spot with Giants

The San Francisco Giants will add former Athletics relief pitcher Lou Trivino to their roster for Opening Day.

Trivino, who hasn’t pitched in an MLB game since the 2022 season while playing with the New York Yankees, has been recovering from Tommy John Surgery and will make his long-awaited return to the big leagues in a Giants uniform.

To make room for Trivino on their active roster, San Francisco designated infielder David Villar for assignment.

Trivino, a 33-year-old right-hander, holds a career 3.86 ERA and has struck out 299 batters over 284.2 innings. The Pennsylvania native spent five seasons with the A’s–where he played under current Giants manager Bob Melvin–before finishing the 2022 season with the Yankees after being acquired in the Frankie Montas trade.

The injury bug has bitten the San Francisco Giants in the final days of Spring Training.

San Francisco announced this week that designated hitter and outfielder Jerar Encarnación will have surgery to repair his broken left hand, meaning the former Sacramento River Cats product will begin the season on the injured list.

A timetable for Encarnación’s recovery period will be determined after surgery, which is set to take place later this week.

The news of Encarnación’s is a tough blow for the San Francisco Giants, especially when you factor in how strong the 27-year-old looked this spring.

Over 20 Cactus League appearances, Encarnación hit .302 with two home runs, 14 RBI, and an impressive .547 slugging percentage to firmly plant himself in the driver’s seat for the Opening Day designated hitter in manager Bob Melvin’s lineup.

With Encarnación out for what is expected to be a lengthy absence, the Giants will now lean on Wilmer Flores, Luis Matos, and LaMonte Wade Jr. to fill in at the DH spot going forward.
