The San Francisco Giants announced this week that designated hitter and outfielder Jerar Encarnación is expected to miss approximately eight weeks after undergoing surgery to repair his left hand fracture with Dr. Steve Shin in Los Angeles last Friday.
Encarnación will be in a splint for two weeks before beginning his rehabilitation process, which will likely sideline him until at least June–something that manager Bob Melvin said was expected when the injury transpired.
“I think we were always looking at that, to tell you the truth,” manager Bob Melvin said of the injury timeline.
Encarnación suffered the injury after jamming his left ring finger while attempting to make a diving catch in right field during the final week of Spring Training.
While Encarnación initially said he hoped to be back after four to five weeks, the timeline shifted once the Giants determined he needed surgery to insert pins to help stabilize the fracture in his hand.

The news of Jerar Encarnación’s is a tough blow for the San Francisco Giants, especially when you factor in how strong the 27-year-old looked this spring.
Over 20 Cactus League appearances, Encarnación hit .302 with two home runs, 14 RBI, and an impressive .547 slugging percentage to firmly plant himself in the driver’s seat for the Opening Day designated hitter in manager Bob Melvin’s lineup.
With Jerar Encarnación out for what is expected to be a lengthy absence, the Giants will now lean on Wilmer Flores, Luis Matos, and LaMonte Wade Jr. to fill in at the DH spot going forward.

Following an opening weekend in which he homered in both of the first two contests of the season, Sacramento River Cats infielder Brett Auerbach has been named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week for March 28-30.
For the series, Auerbach logged a hit in every game and was a combined 5-for-11 (.455), with four of his five hits going for extra bases. In addition to driving in a run in each of the three games (four RBI total), Auerbach generated a triple slash line of .500/1.182/1.682 while striking out only once.
In game one Auerbach represented the first Sacramento River Cats run of the season with a solo blast leading off the bottom of the third inning, one that proved to be the game-winning run. He left the yard again for a pair of insurance tallies in his final at-bat on Saturday, and on Sunday the Alabama product produced a pair of doubles.
