Athletics roster moves: Hoglund to IL, Bleday returns from AAA

The Athletics made a series of roster moves this week that included recalling OF JJ Bleday from AAA Las Vegas & placing Miguel Andujar on the IL.

The Athletics placed right-handed pitcher Gunnar Hoglund on the 15-day injured list retroactive to June 1 with a left hip impingement and third baseman/outfielder Miguel Andujar on the 10-day injured list with a strained right oblique, the club announced today.  The A’s also recalled right-handed pitcher Elvis Alvarado and outfielder JJ Bleday from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Hoglund was recalled from Las Vegas on May 2 and went 1-3 with a 6.40 ERA in six starts.  He allowed a .299 opponents batting average and surrendered 10 home runs in 32.1 innings.  Hoglund went 1-0 with a 2.38 ERA over his first two starts but is 0-3 with an 8.57 ERA in four starts since then.

Andujar is batting .296 with three home runs and 20 RBI in 46 games and has a .390 average with runners in scoring position.  He is 1-for-15 over his last five games after stringing together a career-best 13-game hitting streak.  Andujar has made 17 of his last 21 starts at third base and has started games at four different positions overall, including 21 in left field, 18 at third base, two in right field and two at designated hitter.

Bleday was on the A’s Opening Day roster and was hitting .204 with six home runs and 18 RBI in 47 games when he was optioned to Las Vegas on May 23.  He went 10-for-27 (.370) with five runs scored, a home run, six RBI, three walks and two stolen bases in six games with the Aviators.

Alvarado joins the Athletics for the second time this year.  He was recalled for the first time on May 9 and allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four in 2.2 innings over two appearances in his Major League debut.

The 26-year-old right-hander was sent back to Las Vegas on May 13 and logged a 7.50 ERA in six relief appearances following his option.  Alvarado is 1-1 with six saves, a 4.57 ERA and .687 opponents OPS in 20 relief appearances overall with the Aviators.  He has struck out 28 and walked 10 in 21.2 innings while holding the opposition to a .210 batting average.
