SF Giants trade OF Luis Matos in flurry of roster moves

The San Francisco Giants made a series of under-the-radar roster moves on March 30, 2026, signaling continued fine-tuning as they shape their roster depth heading into the early part of the MLB season.

While none of the transactions qualify as headline-grabbing, each reflects the organization’s ongoing effort to balance immediate needs with long-term flexibility.

The most notable move saw outfielder Luis Matos traded to the Milwaukee Brewers for cash considerations.

In limited MLB action over the past two seasons, Matos hit around the .250 range with developing power and speed, but struggled with consistency and on-base production. With the Giants’ outfield depth becoming increasingly crowded, moving Matos opens opportunities for other contributors while giving him a clearer path elsewhere.

In a corresponding move to bolster pitching depth, the San Francisco Giants acquired right-hander Dylan Smith from the Detroit Tigers, also for cash considerations. Smith, a former third-round draft pick, has spent most of his career in the minors, where he has posted a solid strikeout rate—often hovering near or above a batter per inning.

However, command has been an issue, with elevated walk rates limiting his ceiling. By optioning Smith to Triple-A Sacramento, the Giants are taking a low-risk chance on a pitcher who could develop into a useful bullpen or spot-start option if he refines his control.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Giants designated Tyler Fitzgerald for assignment.

Fitzgerald, a utilityman who spent the bulk of his time at second base, batted .252 with 21 home runs and 28 stolen bases over parts of three seasons (2023-2025) with San Francisco.

DFA’ing Fitzgerald doesn’t necessarily mean his time in the organization is over, but it does expose him to waivers and potential interest from other clubs.

From a broader perspective, these moves highlight how the San Francisco Giants continue to operate on the margins—prioritizing depth, flexibility, and incremental upgrades. This has been a defining strategy for the franchise in recent years, particularly as they compete in the highly competitive NL West. Ultimately, the Giants are betting that small adjustments—whether it’s adding an arm like Smith or reallocating opportunities in the outfield—can pay dividends as the season unfolds.
