Could Mikel Brown Jr. be an option for the Kings at 7th?

Louisville guard Mikel Brown Jr. remains one of the more intriguing prospects available in the 2026 NBA Draft, and longtime college basketball analyst and Louisville radio host Bob Valvano believes the talented freshman possesses plenty of upside despite some areas that still need refinement.

Speaking with Sactown Sports’ The Drive Guys, Valvano shared his evaluation of Brown, who enjoyed an impressive lone season with Louisville.

The 6-foot-5, 190-pound guard averaged 18.2 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game on 41/34/84 shooting splits while earning All-ACC and All-ACC Freshman Team honors.

Valvano said Mikel Brown Jr. entered the season with significant expectations before injuries interrupted portions of his year.

“He was being talked about very highly,” Valvano said. “He’s a very nice young man, he’s a very bright kid, he’s a likable kid, and he’s a very gifted offensive player.”

According to Valvano, Brown’s shooting ability stands out immediately.

“He’s a streaky shooter. If he makes one, he’s liable to make five,” Valvano said. “That’s exciting. He’s got great range.”

While praising Brown’s offensive arsenal, Valvano noted that some of the freshman’s decision-making occasionally led him into trouble.

“He sometimes will choose the most difficult pass when he doesn’t have to,” Valvano said. “There were times this year they weren’t under time pressure, and there was a simpler pass that could have been made. He doesn’t choose to throw that pass, and I’m not sure why that is.”

Valvano believes Mikel Brown Jr.’s confidence can occasionally work against him.

“He’s made a shot or two, and now he’s not letting the game be simple,” Valvano said. “He’s going and looking to do something spectacular because he feels like he’s on a roll.”

Defensively, Valvano acknowledged Brown isn’t elite, but appreciates his willingness to compete.

“He tries defensively,” Valvano said. “I don’t think he’s a great defender, but he tries, and he will pass the ball. He’s not selfish in that regard.”

Despite identifying areas for improvement, Valvano remains optimistic about Brown’s future.

“The analogy I can give is a lot of times watching him this year was like watching a really, really great movie where you want to give up to the guy in the projection booth and say, ‘You’re out of focus a little bit. Just tighten that up for me,'” Valvano said.

For NBA teams seeking offensive upside and shooting ability, Mikel Brown Jr.’s talent could make him one of the draft’s most fascinating guards.

Sacramento has been heavily linked to Arkansas guard Darius Acuff Jr. and Houston guard Kingston Flemings, but in the scenario that general manager Scott Perry takes a swing on Brown at seventh, Valvano’s scouting report is one that could excite Kings fans about their potential new point guard.
