Kings, DeMar DeRozan part ways following two seasons

Following months of speculation, the Sacramento Kings and veteran wing DeMar DeRozan have officially parted ways.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Kings have waived DeRozan, who is on a partially guaranteed $10 million contract for the 2026-27 season.

Rather than keep the 36-year-old on the roster heading into the 2026-27 season, where he would have seen his contract jump to $25.7 million on January 10, 2027, Sacramento clears around $14 million in cap space as they look to trim down a bloated payroll.

The Kings reportedly attempted to trade DeRozan, but a lack of offers led to an eventual release that will allow him to sign with the team of his choice in free agency.

DeMar DeRozan signed with the Kings prior to the 2024-25 season with the hope that the future Hall of Famer would complement an up-and-coming team that featured De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis, but it didn’t take long for the wheels to fall off the Beam Team 2.0.

Mike Brown was fired from his role as head coach just two months into DeRozan’s tenure in Sacramento, and Fox was traded to San Antonio just five weeks later.

Although DeRozan dealt with widespread personnel changes during his Kings tenure, he continued to do what he does best: score at a high clip.

Over 154 games in Sacramento, DeRozan averaged 20.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game while shooting 48 percent from the field, 32 percent from three-point range, and 86 percent from the foul line.

During the 2025-26 season, the six-time NBA All-Star climbed to 16th on the league’s all-time scoring list, passing legends like Oscar Robertson, Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett, and Allen Iverson in the process.

Kings general manager Scott Perry has made his objective clear since arriving in Sacramento last season — shedding salary — and releasing DeRozan allows both parties to move on and explore different options heading into the new season.

The Los Angeles native is expected to receive interest from both the Lakers and Clippers in free agency, per multiple reports.
