49ers QB Brock Purdy wants more from offense ahead of Chargers preseason matchup
Brock Purdy admitted the 49ers offense had “not our best day” in practice while praising Kaelon Black & Osa Odighizuwa ahead of Thursday.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy wasn’t thrilled with how the offense performed during Tuesday’s practice ahead of Thursday’s preseason matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Purdy acknowledged that the 49ers’ offense was missing some of its usual sharpness, citing fundamentals and execution as areas that need improvement before the team takes the field against Los Angeles.
“Honestly, I don’t think it was our best day,” Purdy said. “I feel like fundamentals and stuff were just a little off and whatnot. Obviously there was some good stuff, some stuff we need to work on, but I just feel like we could have come out with a little bit more chip on our shoulder, offensively.”

More from 49ers QB Brock Purdy
One factor has been the revolving door at wide receiver. Injuries have kept some of San Francisco’s receivers in and out of practice, making it more difficult for Purdy to build consistent chemistry with the group.
Still, Purdy isn’t using it as an excuse.
“Obviously you want to have the same guys out in the field and whatnot, getting your chemistry down, but I think we’ve done a good job, though, of the next guy being up and ready,” Purdy said. “I love all of our receivers and stuff. I know we’ve had some grinders and some practices the last couple of days.”
Purdy also addressed a pass that was deflected and nearly intercepted during practice. Despite the mistake, the quarterback said his approach throughout camp has been centered on protecting the football and making smart decisions when a play isn’t there.
“My mindset is go in and try to execute every play,” Purdy said. “Obviously, you don’t want to turn the ball over, but I just try to be efficient, get into a habit of if it’s not there, check the ball down, throw the ball away.”
Purdy also praised running back Kaelon Black, who returned from injury and impressed him with his physical running style.
“You could tell there’s a different level of intensity when he touches the ball,” Purdy said.
The quarterback was equally complimentary of San Francisco’s defensive line, particularly defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa, whom Purdy called “one of the more slept-on guys in the league.”
“Osa is a baller,” Purdy said. “Every single play, he’s almost going to sack me, it feels like.”
With Thursday’s preseason game approaching, Brock Purdy knows the 49ers still have work to do. Tuesday’s practice wasn’t perfect, but the quarterback expects the offense to respond and clean things up before facing the Chargers.
