If Brenden Rice joins the San Francisco 49ers, then he’ll have enormous shoes to fill.
The son of Hall of Famer Jerry Rice spoke to the media Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine, confirming he’s had a formal interview with his father’s former team.
“I was ecstatic,” Brenden Rice said of his meeting with the 49ers. “Just to go ahead and go back and forth over some topics [like] how I could get better, how I could contribute to the 49ers team and just to be a part of where my dad left my legacy at.”
Through four seasons between Colorado and USC, Brenden Rice recorded 111 catches for 1,821 yards and 21 touchdowns. In his senior year as a Trojan, he caught 45 balls for just under 800 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Brenden is projected, by multiple outlets, to be a third-round selection. If the 49ers use one of their two third-round picks on him, his father won’t be the only connection he has to the 49ers. The younger Rice grew up in Chandler, Ariz., the hometown of current 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. Brenden also talked about competing and working out with him while they were both younger.
“He went out there and competed. That’s who he has always been,” Brenden said of Purdy’s performance last season. “He’s gone and competed against whoever, doesn’t matter the opportunity, he’s going to make the most of it, and that’s the type of person you want around the team.
