After trading down at the end of the second round, the 49ers move up to take Kansas’ Dominick Puni.
The San Francisco 49ers have selected offensive lineman Dominick Punt with the 84th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft Friday. To do so, SF had to move up right spots with the Philadelphia Eagles, giving them the 94th (third round) and 132nd (fourth round) overall picks in this year’s draft.
After missing out on a OL in the first two rounds, the 49ers don’t make the mistake thrice, moving up eight spots to get their guy.

Dominick Puni, 24, played two seasons at Kansas, spending time across the line of scrimmage. He played primarily at tackle and guard over 25 consecutive starts. Punt did not allow a single sack in that timeframe (nearly 1,600 snaps). Prior to that, he spent time at division-two Central Missouri.
The 49ers have needed to draft an offensive lineman (or two) since the end of Super Bowl LVIII. Now they add more in Puni, with the team envisioning him as a swing player on the line. He will mainly be considered an NFL guard however.
The 49ers spend their first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft (31st overall) on wide receiver Ricky Pearsall. Then, they traded back a spot to 64th overall to take cornerback Renardo Green.
SF is still equipped with six draft picks on Saturday, filling three needs in the first three rounds.
#49ers use the No. 86 pick on Kansas OL Dominick Puni. Niners go OL with their third pick of the draft. They've gone WR, CB, OL. Those were arguably their three biggest needs entering the draft.
