Brock Purdy admits he felt ‘tentative’ after early mistakes against Green Bay

Adversity is a word Brock Purdy is far too familiar with, having to dig deep last Saturday to lead his squad to victory. But that success came after a mountain of unrest that night.
The San Francisco 49ers quarterback struggled mightily in the rain last Saturday against the Packers, only throwing for one touchdown in the NFC Divisional Round. While Purdy did finish with 252 passing yards, the 49ers’ offense was out of rhythm, unable to reach the red zone until the final drive.
Of course, all that matters is if you won and how you played at the end. But Purdy admitted Wednesday that early struggles in the contest hindered his ability to see the field for much of the game. That includes an almost pick-six on the opening possession for SF.
“Early on, there were some decisions that I made that sort of made me feel a little tentative,” Brock Purdy said. “It’s like, go through your reads and take the checkdowns when the defense presents itself the way it does, and build off that, rather than trying to search for the play and look for the big play. And then when it’s not there, not having confidence in our checkdowns and stuff. So, that’s something that I have to be better at.”

Additionally, the Arizona native admitted to looking for the big play once the offense broke down initially. This was a problem Christmas night against the Baltimore Ravens, a game where Purdy threw four interceptions.
Maybe it’s a coincidence, maybe it’s not.
The point is that Purdy has shown a tendency to look for the home run shot when he doesn’t feel comfortable with his check-downs. In turn, that’s led to mistakes for the young gunslinger.
“Yeah, I’d say so. Yeah, in that game,” Brock Purdy answered about looking for the big plays too much against GB.
But while Purdy struggled last Saturday, his team had his back, looking at the second-year player’s full body of work over everything else. In the end, their QB came through for them, and that’s all that matters.
“He’s the reason why I’m sitting here today feeling like I have an opportunity this weekend to play my best football because [we have a] quarterback like him,” wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk stated Wednesday.
"We're all sitting here because of him." 💯
