The 36-year-old was on a rehab assignment with the Sacramento River Cats due to wrist inflammation before his release.
After spending the 2020-22 seasons in San Francisco, the Giants traded Ruf to the New York Mets during last summer’s trade deadline. The trade brought infielder and Elk Grove native J.D. Davis to the Bay, a player who has fared well during his first season in the orange and black.
Ruf signed a deal to return to the Giants on April 8th, playing in nine games while hitting .261 and driving three runs before suffering a wrist injury on April 23rd.
San Francisco has gotten a boost from rookie infielder Casey Schmitt since the 24-year-old was called up last week, while Brandon Crawford and Mike Yastrzemski will return from the injured list in the coming days. The Giants are in the midst of a roster crunch, and Ruf was the first odd man out.
Over 256 career appearances for San Francisco, Ruf his 32 home runs, drove in 102 RBI, and batted .248 in 753 plate appearances.
