Deonte Burton and Stanley Johnson named to USA’s AmeriCup Qualifying Team

Monday morning, the Stockon Kings announced two of their roster players, Deonte Burton and Stanley Johnson, have been named to the February 2024 USA Basketball Men’s AmeriCup Qualifying Team.

Training camp will take place from February 16-21 in Kissimmee, Florida, before their first matchup against Cuba on February 22nd. Then, Cuba will get their chance to host a home game on February 25th.

According to the Team USA basketball, Deonte Burton and Stanley Johnson will be joining Jordan Bell, Michael Carter-Williams, Will Davis, RaiQuan Gray, Dusty Hannahs, Matthew Hurt, Jayce Johnson, Elfrid Payton, Justin Wright-Foreman, and Jahmi’us Ramsey.

The AmeriCup Qualifying Window is the first of three in advance of the 2025 FIBA Men’s AmeriCup. The USA will also square off with Group D opponents Puerto Rico and the Bahamas in upcoming qualifying windows in November 2024 and February 2025.

FIBA AmeriCup Qualifying consists of 16 teams distributed into four, four-team groups. Each team will play each opponent in their group twice, once at home and once away, during three windows which will take place in Feb. 19-27, 2024; Nov. 18-26, 2024; and Feb. 17-25, 2025. The top three teams in each group (12 in total) will qualify for the 2025 FIBA Men’s AmeriCup Aug. 23-31, 2025, in Managua, Nicaragua.

The U.S. is 6-0 all time in FIBA AmeriCup Qualifying games, going undefeated in 2020-21. The Americans have won the FIBA Men’s AmeriCup seven times, most recently in 2017. The USA won bronze in 2022.

This season, Deonte Burton and Stanley Johnson have played well for Stockton (12-6). Burton (6’4) is averaging 10.9 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.3 assists on 42.8/32.0/75.0 shooting splits in 28.6 minutes

Meanwhile, Johnson (6’6) has managed 12.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists on 51.4/46.5/75.9 shooting splits in his 24.7 minutes per night.

It should be a good experience for both players, which could ultimately benefit the Sacramento Kings and their G-League roster in Stockton.
