With two weeks remaining in the 2022 season, the Las Vegas Raiders made the surprising decision to bench long-time starter Derek Carr.
Through an up-and-down season, Carr’s benching wound up being the final nail in the coffin of his Raiders career.
But now, as he learns a new system in New Orleans under former Raiders coach Dennis Allen, Carr admits, in a story from the Associated Press, he didn’t give the Silver and Black his all last season.
“They just didn’t get my best and that drove me crazy at the end of the year because I felt so spread out in so many different ways. I just didn’t feel like myself and I feel bad for the (Raiders) coaches and players.”
Carr finished the 2022 season with his lowest completion percentage since his rookie year, his third-fewest yards thrown and tied his career high for interceptions (14) on his way to a 6-10 record. Later in the story, the AP writes Carr blamed his regression on “a mix of professional and personal challenges” that included learning Josh McDaniels’s system and Jon Gruden’s departure in 2021.
The Raiders drafted Derek Carr in 2014, who ended up starting 142 games for the Silver and Black. Over his nine years as the team’s starter, he threw for a franchise-leading 35,222 passing yards, finished with 62-78 record, took the team to the playoffs twice and made four Pro Bowl appearances.
