Jordi Fernandez, Sacramento Kings associate head coach, joined Cattles and Ramie Thursday to talk about NBA All-Star selections, the team’s recent defensive improvements and more.

This interview was conducted before the NBA All-Star game reserves were announced. After Cattles & Ramie spoke to Fernandez, Domantas Sabonis was announced as a reserve for the All-Star game.

Topics discussed include:

  • “Whatever happens, the reality is we know we have two All-Stars and whatever it is, it is. That’s how we feel. We know we’re in the position we’re in because we have two All-Stars. That’s all we can control.”
  • How much does the offense change with De’Aaron Fox is aggressive?
  • What he’s seen in the recent stretch of improved defensive play.
  • “I think our ball pressure and rim protection has been way better. We may not have a lot of length and size at the rim, but guys have been great at putting their chest in front of the ball and defending without fouling and sacrificing their bodies for the team.”
  • Why has the team been better defensively on the road?
  • Was there ever any worry when Malik Monk was going through his slump?
  • “Malik is a confident person. He has an amazing energy, and every day he brings a smile to everybody…There’s been stretches where you miss shots and games may not go your way, but his attitude has been positive.”
  • Have the Kings figured out how to win games without relying on the three-point shot?
