The All-Star closer joined the show to discuss the shortened season, Oakland’s hot start and more!
Thursday morning on The Carmichael Dave Show with JayMarzz, the guys got a chance to have a conversation with Oakland Athletics closer Liam Hendriks.
Hendriks, who made his first All-Star team in 2019, has been dominant during his two-year tenure as the A’s closer.
After struggling as a middle-reliever with Oakland from 2017-18, manager Bob Melvin slid Hendriks into the closer’s role after Blake Treinen departed the club following the 2019 season.
In his last two seasons, Hendriks has a 5-4 record to go along with a 1.76 ERA and 142 strikeouts over only 97.1 innings. The right-hander struck out 13.1 batters per nine innings pitched in 2019 and 2018, placing himself among the league’s leaders.
In 2020, the 31 year-old Australian native leads all of Major League Baseball with eight saves in nine opportunities.
On his mindset going into a shortened 60-game season, Hendriks shed some light on how the team approached 2020 campaign.
“There was definitely a sense of urgency at the start, especially after we dropped a couple of games,” he said. “Like, ‘what is going on?’ and ‘we need to figure this out’, and then guys showed up and started figuring it out a little bit quicker than usual, which is always nice.”
Dave, JayMarzz and Hendriks go on to discuss the A’s hot start, Cribbage and much more over the span of the interview.
