Matt Barnes, NBA analyst for NBC Sports and ESPN, joined The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross Wednesday to talk about Ja Morant, how his experience compares to Morant’s, and more.

Morant is away from the Memphis Grizzlies after he displayed a gun in an Instagram live video. The incident is being investigated by police in Colorado and was the latest in a series of stories surrounding him or people in his inner circle brandishing a weapon. There is currently no timetable for his return.

“This kid is 23 years old with the world at the palm of his hands, and not to make any excuses, but I could only imagine at his age with that much money, you kind of feel like you’re invincible from a standpoint,” Barnes told Dave and Jason.

Topics include:

  • His thoughts on Ja Morant and what should happen next for the player and the Memphis Grizzlies organization.
  • “He has to move more carefully than 99% of the NBA.”
  • How veteran NBA players like Chris Webber helped Matt when he first entered the league.
  • “I think there’s just a lack of leadership from a veteran, a real veteran standpoint, in every NBA locker room.”
  • Growing up in a “tough situation” and facing a “ton of racism” as a child and young man in Sacramento.
