A’s re-sign LHP T.J. McFarland to one-year deal

The Athletics re-signed left-handed reliever T.J. McFarland to a one-year contract ahead of their move next season to Sacramento.

McFarland, 35, was 2-4 with a 3.81 ERA in a major league-leading 79 appearances. He finished the season with 39 strikeouts over 56 2/3 innings. It was his second stint with the A’s after he went 2-0 with a 4.35 ERA in 23 relief appearances for them in 2020.

In 12 major league seasons, McFarland is 26-20 with a 4.10 ERA in 433 games (three starts) for five different clubs, including his first four seasons with the Baltimore Orioles (2013-16).

The A’s have traded countless star players over the years, but they do not plan on moving 2023 All-Star slugger Brent Rooker this offseason.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, Athletics general manager David Forst has shot down any speculation that the franchise will be looking to move Rooker, who was the driving force behind an A’s team that won 69 games this season–their winningest campaign since 2021.

Forst and the A’s recently conveyed that the team will look to build a competitive roster as they relocate to Sacramento for the 2025-27 seasons and wait for a new stadium to be built in Las Vegas.

If the Athletics want to field a competitive team, retaining and building around current talent is crucial. By keeping Rooker, the A’s are already getting off on the right foot heading into an offseason that will likely feature more roster turnover.
