Report: Giants open to offers for Devers, Chapman & others

The San Francisco Giants could be headed toward a dramatic selloff ahead of the trade deadline.

According to ESPN insider Buster Olney, the Giants are open to offers for several of their highest-paid position players, including Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, and Matt Chapman.

Olney reported that rival teams are wondering whether president of baseball operations Buster Posey will attempt to unload at least one significant contract before the deadline as San Francisco looks to reshape its roster and replenish its farm system.

The MLB trade deadline is set to pass on Monday, August 3rd at 3 pm PT.

The Giants are open to offers for their three highest-paid position players — Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, Matt Chapman — among other obvious trade candidates, like Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray.

Could the San Francisco Giants be big-time sellers in July?

The San Francisco Giants enter play on Tuesday at 29-43 and sit 8.5 games behind the third and final National League Wild Card spot. After entering the season with postseason aspirations, San Francisco has emerged as one of baseball’s biggest disappointments.

Olney noted that Posey’s next moves will be crucial as the organization attempts to build a stronger pipeline of young pitching. While top prospect Bryce Eldridge is viewed as a cornerstone piece for the future, the Giants need more affordable talent after receiving underwhelming production from several expensive veterans.

Perhaps the most surprising name mentioned by Olney is Devers, who was acquired from the Boston Red Sox in a blockbuster deal last season.

The three-time All-Star has struggled to find his footing in San Francisco, batting .235 with nine home runs and a .706 OPS. Those numbers are well below his career .846 OPS mark and 33 home runs-per-season average.

Devers is also owed approximately $225 million through the 2033 season, making his contract one of the largest commitments on the Giants’ payroll. Any team interested in acquiring the slugger would have to be willing to absorb a significant financial obligation.

Olney also reported that Luis Arraez could be one of the most coveted players available this summer. With relatively few impact bats expected to be moved before the deadline, Arraez’s ability to consistently put the ball in play could make him an attractive option for contenders seeking offensive help.

Arraez, 29, is playing on a one-year, $12 million deal and has posted a .319 batting average (fifth-best in MLB) and .787 OPS (third-best among all Giants hitters).

Whether the San Francisco Giants ultimately move one of their franchise cornerstones remains to be seen, but with the club falling further out of contention, Posey and the front office could face difficult decisions in the coming weeks.
