As August 1st’s Major League Baseball trade deadline approaches, all 30 teams will enter this weekend seeking momentum toward an important decision:

To sell or to buy?

We know the San Francisco Giants (56-47) will be a buyer this summer following a strong July that has put them three games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West standings and possession of the top National League Wild Card spot.

Although the path to buying at the deadline is clear for the Giants, it’s a different situation for the Boston Red Sox (55-47) entering play on Friday.

Boston currently sits 1.5 games behind the third and final American League Wild Card spot and seven games behind the impressive Baltimore Orioles in the American League East.

The Red Sox might be in the mix for a postseason spot, but they have already started re-tooling its roster. Earlier this week, Boston traded utility man Kike Hernandez to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Could the Giants push the Sox into “sell” mode with a series win this weekend?

Many teams are sitting on the fence of buying and selling this deadline. Boston is currently one of those teams, and San Francisco can put the Red Sox in a tough spot if they can take two of three or sweep during this weekend’s action at Oracle Park.

Rocklin native Logan Webb will get things started for the Giants on Friday as the right-hander will take the ball against Boston’s Kutter Crawford.

Webb is seeking a bounce-back start following his rough showing against the Washington Nationals last week (6 ER, 5 H, 1.1 IP). Until his six-run outing against Washington, Webb had held a 2.72 ERA over his past 16 starts.

It’s shaping up to be an interesting pre-deadline series between San Francisco and Boston. Here’s this weekend’s probable starting pitchers and game start info:
