Giants take series from D-Backs, remain in top NL Wild Card spot

It was imperative that the San Francisco Giants perform well against their National League West counterpart during this week’s series at Oracle Park.

Not only did San Francisco fare well during a four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but they closed out a four-game set by delivering a 1-0 shutout win on Thursday afternoon.

The Giants (61-49) took three out of four games from Arizona (57-53) to increase its lead over the D-Backs to four games in the National League West standings.

Two games removed from a clutch go-ahead home run during the seventh inning of Tuesday’s 4-3 win, LaMonte Wade Jr. provided the San Francisco offense with all of the run support it would need on Thursday with one swing of the bat.

Wade drilled a solo homer to right during the bottom of the fourth inning, his 11th of the season, to give the Giants a 1-0 lead. From then on, San Francisco’s pitching staff went to work.

Tristan Beck took on the bulk of innings during the win, tossing four shutout innings while holding Arizona to two hits and striking out three batters. Beck then handed the ball over to Sean Manaea (0.2 IP), Luke Jackson (1.1 IP), Taylor Rogers (1.0 IP), and Camilo Doval (1.0 IP) for the final four innings.

The Giants’ pitching staff held the D-Backs to six hits and walked just three batters during their ninth shutout of the season.

During the four-game set at Oracle Park, San Francisco posted a 2.25 ERA in what was an encouraging showcase from a team that has fared well on the mound this season (3.83 team ERA, sixth-best in Major League Baseball).

While the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Oakland Athletics on Thursday to maintain its 2.5-game lead over the Giants in the National League West standings, San Francisco continues to hold the top National League Wild Card spot.

Entering play on Friday, the Giants lead the Philadelphia Phillies by 1.5 games in the NL Wild Card standings. Here is an updated look at where San Francisco stands heading into this weekend’s two-game set in Oakland.
