San Francisco Giants set roster for Opening Day

The 2025 San Francisco Giants Opening Day roster is set as baseball returns on Thursday afternoon.

Some familiar faces are back in the fold, as Opening Day starting pitcher Logan Webb and outfielder Mike Yastrzemski are back for their seventh seasons with the Giants, while Wilmer Flores returns for his sixth season in San Francisco.

New additions include prized offseason signing and starting shortstop Willy Adames, future Hall of Fame pitcher Justin Verlander, and former Athletics relief pitcher Lou Trivino.

The injury bug has bitten the San Francisco Giants in the final days of Spring Training.

San Francisco announced this week that designated hitter and outfielder Jerar Encarnación will have surgery to repair his broken left hand, meaning the former Sacramento River Cats product will begin the season on the injured list.

A timetable for Encarnación’s recovery period will be determined after surgery, which is set to take place later this week, meaning that the slugger will not be a part of the San Francisco Giants Opening Day roster.

The news of Encarnación’s is a tough blow for the San Francisco Giants, especially when you factor in how strong the 27-year-old looked this spring.

Over 20 Cactus League appearances, Encarnación hit .302 with two home runs, 14 RBI, and an impressive .547 slugging percentage to firmly plant himself in the driver’s seat for the Opening Day designated hitter in manager Bob Melvin’s lineup.

With Encarnación out for what is expected to be a lengthy absence, the Giants will now lean on Wilmer Flores, Luis Matos, and LaMonte Wade Jr. to fill in at the DH spot going forward.
