Kyle Shanahan is still hopeful Nick Bosa can play in Monday’s game against Washington, but the 49ers coach is waiting for more information after the defensive end missed Thursday’s practice with a calf injury.

“Hoping he can go, but not able to practice today,” Shanahan said.

Bosa was among six players ruled out Thursday. Deebo Samuel (hamstring), linebacker Garret Wallow (hamstring), defensive lineman James Thompson Jr. (ankle), safety Marques Sigle (ankle) and receiver Mike Evans (ribs and Achilles soreness) also did not practice.

Samuel’s injury could put him on injured reserve, though San Francisco is factoring in its upcoming bye week before deciding.

“If we didn’t have that Bye Week, I think it’d be around that area,” Shanahan said. “Gaining that week where we don’t play is why we’re still trying to wait out right now and hope we don’t have to do it.”

Receiver Christian Kirk, limited with a calf injury, returned to practice after setbacks dating to the first day of training camp.

Shanahan said Kirk “had a real good week, had an awesome weekend and he’s ready to give it a go.” Kyle Juszczyk (knee), Siran Neal (neck) and Upton Stout (shoulder) were also limited, as was Colton McKivitz, who was sick.

Shanahan said the 49ers have been more comfortable rotating Christian McCaffrey this season, with the goal of keeping him fresh. “We wanted to do that to, not necessarily keep him healthy but just keep him his freshest throughout the game as we could,” he said.

The first couple of games dictated the workload more than expected, while other weeks have followed the plan.

After an emotional win over Seattle, Shanahan called Washington “probably our biggest challenge so far.” He said the extra day could help the 49ers move on, but can also leave players sitting with the emotions longer.

“I was glad to get started today,” he said, adding that the team’s early approach at practice had been good.

Shanahan also praised Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, saying he has “a chance to be one of the better quarterbacks in this league.” He pointed to Daniels’ accuracy, arm strength and poise in the pocket, along with his ability to win games as a runner.

On San Francisco’s defense, Shanahan credited coordinator Raheem Morris’s scheme with encouraging the secondary to play more aggressively.

Defensive backs cannot always count on linebacker help, he said, and have to learn to stop plays on their own. Experience and continuity across the secondary have helped, too.
