Listen to The Nick Cattles Show 3:00pm-6:00pm PST Monday through Friday right here on Sports 1140 KHTK

A new chapter for Sports 1140 KHTK sports coverage and daily sports talk has begun.

January 4, 2022 marked the start of a new local sports talk lineup here at KHTK, one that includes familiar voices in The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross (Weekdays, 6:00am-9:00am PST) and a newcomer to the Sacramento sports talk landscape in Nick Cattles.

Cattles, who will also take the reins as the station’s Programming Director, will broadcast his debut show on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00pm PST to talk about wide variety of both local and national sports topics.

Who is exactly is Nick Cattles, though? Where is he from? What is his experience in sports radio? What is he doing in Sacramento?

Let’s find out:

So, Nick Cattles…who are you? Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m originally from Rhode Island. I spent my first 30 years of life there. I graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism. My first paid radio gig was in Providence, Rhode Island at 790 AM “The Score”.

I ended up leaving radio for a few years, which was a mistake. I was fortunate enough to get back into it in 2009 as part of the 98-5 The Sports Hub launch in Boston.

I have an older brother, I’m married and have the best dog in the world. No kids…Yet.

What are your favorite sports and your favorite sports teams?

This is going to sound like pandering, but I truly do love all four major sports.

I’d include college football and basketball, although I don’t have enough time to watch much College Basketball anymore. Tourney time, let’s go!

I also love mixed martial arts, with a strong love for the UFC.

Being from New England, I grew up on the Sox-Pats-Celts-Bruins. In College Football it’s Notre Dame–I didn’t grow up with much money and they were the only college football team I could watch consistently on Saturdays. And, I’d like to add, I’m old enough to remember when New England sports was NOT good.

Who is your All-time favorite athlete?

Ugh…that’s kind of impossible.

Some of my favorites from teams I grew up on–Tom Brady, Mo Vaughn, Pedro Martinez, Paul Pierce, and Patrice Bergeron.

How long have you worked in sports radio?

I started in ’04 and lasted for a couple of years…Then, got back into it in ’09 and have been going ever since. So, I guess you’d say roughly 14-15 years.

Jeez, didn’t realize it’s been that long.

What brought you to Sports 1140 KHTK and the city of Sacramento?

So many things.

KHTK’s legacy and heritage as the sports station in Sacramento. The staff that I think has so much potential. The opportunity to stay in the afternoon as a host, where I’ve been most of the last 10 years. The chance to run a sports station as a PD in a market that has a pro sports team.

The passion and loyalty of Kings fans. Working for a great company like Bonneville…That’s just professionally.

Personally: The adventure. Living on the west coast, after spending my entire life on the east coast. Embracing the time change as a sports fan, which is already incredible.

It was time to do something different and to face a new challenge–This was the perfect place to do both.

What excites you the most about this new opportunity?

As a Program Director: Everything.

Working with other hosts, creating the sound & vision of the station, helping develop younger & diverse talent. The opportunity to build a bigger and better relationship with the Kings.

As a host: Working with new people. Being creative in different ways that hopefully will make me better. Talking with a passionate fan base every day.

A ton, let’s put it that way.

What can local sports fans expect from this new era of Sacramento sports radio?

More football talk. More opinion. Being relatable, which I think Dave & Jason already do a really good job of accomplishing. Less hot takes and more smart takes. You can disagree with us, but our arguments will be backed by reason and not just being louder.

And, fun…We’re going to have LOTS of fun.
