A day after getting embarrassed on Christmas, the 49ers appear to be adding another defensive lineman in the form of Sebastian Joseph-Day.
Reports emerged Tuesday afternoon that the player and team had agreed to terms on a one-year deal. While the move won’t be finalized until Wednesday, the addition of another defensive tackle is seen as an upgrade with several members already on the injury report.
NFL Network insider and former safety Jason McCourty was first with the news, with local outlets confirming thereafter.
Can confirm that the 49ers have agreed to terms with Joseph-Day, bolstering the interior of their defensive line while Arik Armstead is out with a foot injury. Deal ought to become official tomorrow. https://t.co/MTNgFwhGTz

Sebastian Joseph-Day, 28, is a former captain with the Los Angeles Chargers, featuring in 14 games for them this season. The Pennsylvania native has racked up 31 combined tackles, 11 quarterback hits and three sacks in 2023. For his career, he has 224 tackles, showcasing his ability to stop the run in the trenches. Joseph-Day is also a Super Bowl champion with the Los Angeles Rams.
The signing coms after he was waived by the Chargers following Week 14. A surprise move for many, “SJD” now heads north for Santa Clara, embarking on another deep postseason run.
For the 49ers, this is an indicator that starting DT Arik Armstead is still battling injuries. Armstead has missed the last the games with foot issues, similar to his plantar fasciitis last season. Follow starter Javon Hargrave has also missed time with a hamstring injury this season.
After giving up 33 points to Baltimore Ravens Week 16, adding Joseph-Day should help the 49ers stop the run at the very least.
The deal is expected to be officially announced Wednesday, with no role specified at this time.
