The San Francisco 49ers are set to make their second coaching hire of the 2023 offseason in Klint Kubiak.
Kubiak, 35, will reportedly join the 49ers’ coaching staff in a prominent offensive role next season, replacing former passing game coordinator Bobby Slowik. Kubiak served in the same role for the Denver Broncos last season, taking his talents to the Bay Area for 2023.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero was the first to report the news Thursday.
The #49ers are hiring Klint Kubiak to a top role on Kyle Shanahan’s offensive staff, replacing Bobby Slowik, per sources.

A former offensive coordinator, Klint will join his brother Klay in San Francisco, the 49ers’ assistant quarterbacks coach last season. The Texas native had a few teams competing for his signature in February, including DeMeco Ryans and the Houston Texans. Looking to acquire Kubiak for their run game coordinator position, Klint will instead join Kyle Shanahan’s staff as a prominent member of the play-calling team.
“I know he loves our staff and he knows I’m working through that too right now, so DeMeco and I will be probably talking a lot here over the next two weeks and I’m just trying to do what’s best for the 49ers,” Shanahan previously stated.
Losing four staff members to Ryans already, the 49ers’ front office is thrilled to get another top candidate in the fold for 2023.
The offensive coaching position in San Francisco has been a breeding ground for other teams, poaching Mike McDaniel and Bobby Slowik from the staff in the past two seasons. Klint Kubiak will add the experience of nine NFL seasons to the 49ers, including one as the OC with the Vikings in 2021.
Kubiak has a 62-83-1 all-time coaching record.
San Francisco made their first coaching hire of the offseason with Steve Wilks as the new defensive coordinator. Adding two highly-regarded coaches to the staff is a big win for the 49ers, already possessing the likes of Brian Griese, Anthony Lynn, Brian Fleury, Chris Forester and Kris Kocurek in the building.
