The San Francisco 49ers have gotten a boost ahead of their Week 3 matchup with the New York Giants as Saquon Barkley will miss the game due to injury.
Reports surfaced Monday afternoon that the Pro Bowl running back has an ankle sprain, an MRI revealed. While the injury could have been a lot worse, Barkley will miss close to three weeks, including Thursday’s clash with the 49ers at Levi’s Stadium.
The news was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who mentioned that it was an “ordinary” sprain for the running back. Other news outlets confirmed the news thereafter.

Saquon Barkley, 26, suffered the injury late in Week 2’s game against the Arizona Cardinals. The RB had to be helped off the field by Giants’ staff, unable to put much weight on his right leg. The halfback was later seen moving around with a noticeable limp on the sideline, suggesting that it wasn’t a serious injury.
But with the short turnaround from Week 2 to 3, there was never really a chance he’d be able to suit up for New York.
The 49ers are also dealing with the injury bug, as wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has a shoulder injury. San Francisco doesn’t fear his injury is serious as well, but with Thursday Night Football rapidly approaching, his situation is worth monitoring.
“Yeah, it happened on his first catch when he landed on his shoulder. I believe it was his first catch,” coach Kyle Shanahan said about Aiyuk’s injury Monday.
