With injuries occurring left and right, the 49ers have added some depth to their secondary in the form of Anthony Brown.
Reports surfaced Tuesday morning that the San Francisco 49ers have signed the cornerback to their 53-man roster. After working out a few secondary members Monday, the Red & Gold found their man a day later.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter was first with the report Tuesday.
Brown, 29, has been in the NFL since 2016, drafted in the sixth round by the Dallas Cowboys. The Purdue alum would go on to play seven seasons in Texas, starting 69 games in his career. The versatile cornerback has nine interceptions, one pick-six, 59 pass breakups and 324 tackles in the NFL.
A free agent after the 2022 season, Brown now lands with the 49ers, ready to contribute right away.
San Francisco will likely ask him to do such, facing injuries to their secondary depth. After placing CB Samuel Womack on injured reserve last weekend (knee), Ambry Thomas suffered an ailment on his lower body in Week 2, putting his status for Week 3 in jeopardy.
And after giving up more than 300 yards passing to the Los Angeles Rams Sunday, it’s no surprise defensive coordinator Steve Wilks wants to get more insurance in the secondary.
