The San Francisco 49ers have been looking to bolster their secondary for some time now, potentially turning to an old friend down the stretch run of the 2023 NFL regular season.
Reports surfaced Thursday afternoon that the 49ers had worked out veteran cornerback Jason Verrett. The news comes after the former 49er was released by the Houston Texans’ practice squad Wednesday. While the report does not elaborate further than that, Verrett’s appearance in Santa Clara is still a sight for sore eyes amongst the 49rs Faithful.
ESPN’s Field Yates was first with the news Thursday.
The 49ers worked out Jason Verrett, who is just over a year removed from his Achilles tear at practice. I'm sure there is at least some level of communication between the 49ers and Texans — enough to update where Verrett may be at physically. He spent about a month with Houston https://t.co/BIRO0rt484

Jason Verrett, 32, was on the 49ers’ roster last season, working his way back from an ACL tear sustained in Week 1 of the 2021 season. Getting ready to make his return to action, the veteran unfortunately tore his Achilles during a November practice session with the Red & Gold, putting him on the shelf once more. Now a year removed from his second serious injury in two seasons, the Fairfield native will attempt to restart his football career after more than 24 months away from gameday.
The former Pro Bowl CB has a storied career in the NFL, drafted in 2014 by the San Diego Chargers. Verrett has played in 40 contests in his career, racking up seven interceptions and 145 combined tackles. Sadly, his career has been barred by injuries, only playing in 20 games since 2016.
Who practiced for the 49ers on Thursday?
The 49ers had most of their players on the field for practice Thursday, with Trent Williams returning to the field.
San Francisco gave their star left tackle his usual veteran rest day Wednesday. Williams has been battling an ankle injury suffering Week 6 against the Cleveland Browns. Missing the two games that followed, the Texas native made his return in Week 10 in Jacksonville, helping the 49ers win, 34-3, on the road. And while Williams did not suffer a setback playing hurt, the team is looking to protect him from further risk as much as possible.
“Trent, like I said [Sunday], checked out today the same way,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan stated Monday. “No setbacks. Hopefully he’ll continue to get better this week.”

Additionally, right tackle Colton McKivitz was seen at practice for a second straight day Thursday. McKivitz is dealing with ankle and knee injuries after getting rolled up on during Week 10’s win. He practiced in a limited fashion on Wednesday, with that expected to be the same for his sound session as well.
