In a salary-cutting move, the Sacramento Kings have traded Richaun Holmes and the 24th overall pick in the NBA Draft to the Dallas Mavericks.
Holmes, who has spent the past four seasons and has $24 million remaining on his contract, is heading to Dallas along with 24th-overall pick Marquette forward Oliver Maxence-Prosper.
According to Spotrac’s Keith Smith, the Kings will have over $30 million (currently projected to have around $36 million) in cap space following the trade. NBA free agency begins next Friday, June 30th, and Sacramento has positioned itself to chase some big names.

After falling out of the rotation following the acquisition of Domantas Sabonis, Holmes spent most of the 2022-23 season on the bench, averaging 3.1 points and 1.9 rebounds per game over 42 appearances.
The Mavericks used a traded player exception to bring Holmes’ $12 million salary in after dealing away forward Davis Bertans to Oklahoma City in a trade that took place earlier on Thursday night.
Sacramento has plenty of cap space to work with this summer, meaning that they can throw its hat into the ring of potential blockbuster deals and key free agent signings.
Players like Draymond Green, Kyle Kuzma, Jerami Grant, and Josh Hart are players that will be on the free agent market come next week, while long-time Kings forward Harrison Barnes will also enter unrestricted free agency after spending the past five years with Sacramento.
