The San Francisco Giants bolstered its infield depth over the weekend by signing veteran infielder Johan Camargo to a minor-league deal.
Camargo, a six-year MLB veteran, has spent seasons with the Atlanta Braves (2017-21) and Philadelphia Phillies (2022) during his time in the bigs, including winning a World Series with the Braves in 2021.
Over 416 games at the MLB level, Camargo holds a .255 batting average with 37 home runs, 159 RBI, and 312 hits while logging innings at third base (199 games), shortstop (95 games), second base (47), and the outfield (17 games).
It didn’t take Camargo very long to make an impact with the Giants’ AAA affiliate, the Sacramento River Cats, as the 29-year-old mashed a 469-foot home run in his first at-bat with the club on Saturday night.
How's that for a first @RiverCats at-bat?

The switch-hitting utility man has joined San Francisco’s organization to provide the Giants with increased depth at all infield spots as the season hits its critical point.
San Francisco (63-55) enters play on Monday just two games ahead of the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds in the National League Wild Card standings. For a team like the Giants, who have dealt with countless injuries to several key members of its roster, insurance is needed during a playoff push. That’s where Camargo comes in.
Over 39 appearances with San Francisco, Kansas City, and Detroit’s AAA affiliates this season, Camargo is hitting .260 with eight home runs and 22 RBI while walking 17 times versus 27 strikeouts.
If San Francisco runs into a situation where any impact infielders like Brandon Crawford, J.D. Davis, or Thairo Estrada have to miss time due to injury, the Giants could turn to a veteran impact like Camargo while rookie Casey Schmitt attempts to re-discover his offense in Sacramento.
