The San Francisco 49ers are catching a huge break ahead of Week 14, with Geno Smith unable to go Sunday afternoon.
The Seattle Seahawks quarterback has been listed as inactive for Sunday’s clash with the 49ers. Smith has been dealing with a groin injury sustained Thursday during practice. Unable to log much work Friday, Seattle signed veteran QB Sean Mannion to the practice squad, subsequently elevating him to the active roster for Week 14.
Despite the odds, Geno Smith underwent a pre-game warmup to determine if he could go Sunday. After ten minutes of throwing drills, the QB was seen walking ooff the field gingerly, talking with trainers throughout the process.
In the end, he didn’t feel comfortable with the ailment, stepping aside for Week 14. Backup QB Drew Lock will start in his place.
Geno Smith went through a 10-minute workout, lot of communication between throws with training staff, looked very ginger, walked off favoring right leg/groin
If he starts for Seahawks vs 49ers, expect lot of shotgun snaps, no zone read, and lot of Nick Bosa & Co. crashing pocket

Lock, 27, was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He has an 8-13 record as a starter, last doing so in 2021. His last NFL win under center came in 2020. Lock was traded to the Seahawks in the Russell Wilson deal, backing up Smith ever since.
Despite the QB change, that doesn’t affect the 49ers’ game planning for their NFC West rivals.
“No. I mean, all our prep work is pretty much done. Similar style quarterbacks doesn’t change the scheme much, so it wouldn’t change anything regardless,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday.
