Trent Williams: Urgency to win a Super Bowl ‘on level 10’ for 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers’ quest for a sixth Lombardi trophy has been well-documented over the last few seasons. Now 29 years removed from their last triumph, the urgency to climb the mountaintop is higher than ever. Just ask Trent Williams.
The future first-ballot Hall-of-Famer has made the NFC Championship game twice in three seasons since joining the 49ers. Both of those games ended in defeat and anguish.
That’s why this time around, there’s no added juice or motivation on the table. Williams and the Red & Gold are extremely motivated to make it to The Big Game and have been since the start of OTAs last spring.
“Honestly man, if your urgency isn’t on level 10, if it wasn’t on level 10 last year, if it wasn’t on level 10 the year before that, it’s probably not going to be on level 10 this year,” Trent Williams said Thursday. “Nobody needs any extra motivation when you talk about Championship Week. Four teams out of 32 left to prove they’re the best. I think the urgency is a given.”

Williams is right on the point of desire to succeed at the highest level. Where he may be underselling it is on how important this year is for the Red & Gold.
The 49ers have been to the conference championship game four of the last five seasons, going 1-2 in that span. The 2023 game ended right as it began, with quarterback Brock Purdy suffering a torn UCL on the opening drive.
Since then, the team has had a sour taste in their mouths, fueled by getting this elite group of players back to the Super Bowl before changes have to be made.
“Teams like this don’t always come around. To have this opportunity, the sense of urgency is definitely high,” running back Christian McCaffrey stated this week.
“The time is now. The time is now. The time is right now. That’s it,” wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk added.
San Francisco faces an enormous payroll entering next season, already on the books for $185 million before the start of free agency. That includes Williams’ team-leading $31.5 million owned to him next season. And after making his 2024 plans to return known, some cuts will have to come elsewhere.
Which is why for now, the 49ers are focused on the present, looking to maximize their championship window this season. And with only the Detroit Lions in their way to another Super Bowl berth, the hunger to make it happen now is higher than it’s ever been.
