Rumors have swirled this offseason regarding quarterback Trey Lance and his future with the San Francisco 49ers. The speculation stems from his relationship with Ran Carthon, which has caused these rumors to grow over time.
Carthon is a former front office executive for the San Francisco 49ers, leaving his post to take the general manager role with the Tennessee Titans last month. Carthon was a favorite in the 49ers’ building, developing close relationships with players like Lance and others.
When it was announced that Carthon would be heading to Nashville, Lance posted a message on Instagram with the “fingers crossed” emoji. Naturally, that got taken out of context, with fans speculating the young QB’s desire to leave the Bay for Tennessee.
Trey Lance put those rumors to bed Thursday on a podcast with his former quarterback coach, Quincy Avery.

“For me, I just want to support guys. This whole season I was more of a 49ers fan page than anything,” Lance said on The Q with Quincy Avery. “Ray-Ray’s got a cool outfit. Azeez’s got a cool video. Fred..whatever it was.
Me and Ran got close. He’d bring his boys in and I’d talk to his kids. For me that was huge. It was like a shining light. Just getting to know someone’s family like that. I was super happy for him.
The fingers crossed emoji wasn’t like, ‘cross my fingers emoji, I want to be a Tennessee Titan.’ I love it here. I don’t want to be anywhere else. That’s my #1 used emoji too.
Kyle [Shanahan] told me the next morning, because we had an install meeting, Kyle asked me, ‘have you seen everything? People say you’re going to the Titans and stuff.’
I go, ‘what are you talking about?’ And he goes, ‘I just saw it. People are talking crazy. They don’t know what they’re talking about. I just thought it was funny.’ He was the one who told me about it. I didn’t see anything.”
Rest assured 49ers Faithful, the third-year QB isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Arm Fatigue/Injury Struggles
Another rumor regarding the QB’s arm fatigue has also resurfaced this week. A major story last offseason, Lance admitted to the reports being partially true Thursday, but for different reasons.
The North Dakota State alum revealed that he had one of the longest draft preps for a QB ever and that only spring-boarded into his rookie and second seasons. Throwing three times a week for 20 straight weeks is unheard of for most quarterbacks, with Lance feeling the results heading into training camp last season.

“This past offseason…My arm was honestly just dead from throwing that whole entire time. Going through 2 fall camps, my last year of college, straight into draft prep. I probably threw 3 times a week from 10/2020 to 1/2022,” Lance said.
This time around he will be fresh heading into the summer, set to be allowed to resume full football activities at the beginning of March.
Lance also admitted that the 2022 season was one of the most challenging of his entire life. Suffering a season-ending injury in Week 2, the highly-touted prospect had to come to grips with sitting on the neck as his teammates pushed for another conference championship berth. Those moments were hard for Lance, using a mental health coach to get him through the darkest of days.
“It was hard some days to stay locked in and see the light at the end of the tunnel,” Trey Lance stated.
More Trey Lance: "It was hard some days to stay locked in and see the light at the end of the tunnel" because of frustrations with ankle rehab. He couldn't hit the rehab "checkmarks" due to pain before the 2nd surgery. Said a mental health coach helped him a lot.
