On a short week already, it appears that the 49ers will also be short-handed heading to Carolina Sunday.
Defensive tackles Arik Armstead and Javon Kinlaw were not present during the media portion of practice Thursday, making their status for Week 5 uncertain. Armstead has been dealing with plantar fasciitis in his foot since the start of Week 3’s prep. The injury kept him out for the road trip to Denver, testing it in pregame warmups. The Sacramento native returned to the field in Week 4 but could not finish the game again the Rams due to irritation.
“No, no change. He’s still day-to-day,” Shanahan said.
Additionally, Kinlaw sustained a knee issue last week with head coach Kyle Shanahan calling it a “flare-up” on his reconstructed ACL. The irritation kept the former first-round pick out for Week 4 and could be missing his second consecutive game this week as well.

The first-round pick from South Carolina, Kinlaw suffered a torn ACL during Week 4 of the 2021 season. He had surgery to repair the issue but a flare-up is not a great sign for the oft-injured defensive lineman.
“Yeah, those guys will be out there for us. They’ll be fine. Yeah,” defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans stated last week. He later corrected his statement, indicating that they are seen as short-term injuries.
Thankfully, two other key cogs of the 49ers’ defense returned this week, in the form of DBs Jimmie Ward and Jason Verrett. Both practiced Wednesday and Thursday, possibly indicating they’re ready to return in Week 5.

“Yeah, they’re eligible to return this week,” Shanahan said. “Yeah there is a chance [both DBs play in Week 5], him and Jason [Verrett] are the same deal.”
Ward has been on the short-term IR since sustaining a significant hamstring injury during the preseason, forcing him to miss the first four games of the regular season. Meanwhile, Verrett has been on the PUP list to open the year, recovering from a torn ACL suffered in Week 1 of the 2021 season.
Both have a 21-day window to return after their first official practice Wednesday, otherwise, they will be out for the remainder of the season.
Update: The official injury report for the 49ers has been released Thursday. Not surprising, Armstead and Kinlaw did not participate. WR Danny Gray was a full participant as well, dealing with a hip injury for the last week or so.
