You never know what a player is going through while on the field, with Charvarius Ward taking care of an injury after a long 2023 season.

The San Francisco 49ers cornerback announced Thursday that he underwent successful surgery. Ward didn’t disclose what the injury was, only that “surgery was a breeze”.

Other members of 49ers media suspect it was a core muscle injury. Ward had the operation at Vincera Institute, a medical facility in Philadelphia that specializes in soft-tissue ailments.

Ward was hampered by a groin issue for much of the season, on and off the injury report. The surgery, presumably, was to correct the injury.

Charvarius Ward, 27, had a breakout season on the 49ers, making his first All-Pro team in his career. He finished the regular season with five interceptions and 24 pass breakups. He was also lights out in the Super Bowl, allowing zero catches and zero targets in 55 snaps. Alongside fellow 49ers CB Deommodore Lenoir, Ward has created a lethal secondary tandem that started to blossom down the stretch.

The Mississippi native signed a three-year, $40.5 million deal with the Red & Gold during the 2022 offseason. Ward has played above his contract value, becoming an All-Pro on the 12th-highest CB salary per year in the NFL. 2024 will be the final year of his current deal, with both sides likely to pursue an extension in the foreseeable future.

Ward is the third 49ers player to announce an injury after the season. Defensive lineman Arik Armstead played through a torn meniscus since Week 13, while fellow DL Javon Hargrave played with a torn ligament in his thumb during the Super Bowl.

Key offseason dates for the San Francisco 49ers

  • Tuesday, Feb. 20th – Teams can begin franchising players until Tuesday, March 5th
  • Tuesday, Feb. 27 – NFL Combine begins
  • Thursday, March 13 – The 2024 free agency signing period begins at 1 p.m. PST
