The San Francisco 49ers are one of four teams to reach the conference championship game this season. So it should be no surprise that they have not one, but two candidates for the most prestigious individual award in the NFL.

Quarterback Brock Purdy and running back Christian McCaffrey have been named finalists for the Associated Press Most Valuable Player award for the 2023 NFL season. Both 49ers members flourished in their first full season as Red & Gold starters, leading the way in most statistical categories.

However, McCaffrey’s inclusion may be the more impressive feat, being the only non-QB to make the finalists for the award. He was also named a finalist for AP Offensive Player of the Year.

Meanwhile, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was named a finalist for coach of the year, reflecting his team’s 12-5 record on the year.

McCaffrey, 27, has been a pillar of consistency since being traded to the 49ers at the 2022 trade deadline. In 27 regular-season contests, CMC has amassed more than 3,200 total yards and 31 TDs for the Red & Gold. He has also been a staple of health, only missing one game since becoming a 49er.

In 2023, he passed the 2,000-scrimmage-yards mark for only the second time in his career. He also finished as the NFL’s leading rusher at 1,459 yards.

Brock Purdy, 24, finished his 2023 campaign by setting the franchise record for passing yards in a single season (4,280). He also had 33 total touchdowns, while only throwing 11 interceptions. He finished tied for second in completion percentage (69.4%) and first in passer rating (113.0).

The Arizona native was named to his first Pro Bowl this season.

Last, but certainly not least: Kyle Shanahan

The 49ers head coach joined the organization in 2017 along with general manager John Lynch. Together they have transformed the Red & Gold back to winning ways, with an overall record of 64-51. His squads have made the NFC Championship game three consecutive seasons, and four times in the past five years.

The NFL Honors show will air on February 8th, where the winner of each award will be announced.
