A’s 3B Coach Eric Martins on Kurtz ascension, rookie CF Clarke

Athletics third base coach Eric Martins joined The Allen Stiles Show on Tuesday to discuss their struggles at Sutter Health Park, recovering from their 11-game losing streak, and more.

Rookie first-baseman Nick Kurtz, recently placed on the injured list, had four home runs and nine runs batted in throughout his last five games before going down.

Martins discussed the development he’s seen from the 2024 fourth overall selection since being called up to the majors.

“The last few games is when you can kind of see him finally settled in a little bit,” he said. “I think the first couple of weeks it was a little overwhelming for him. He was just adjusting to the league.”

He emphasized the young player laying off more pitches while recognizing opponent scouting reports and making solid contact.

But, with him on the sideline, there’s an exciting new outfield prospect who made his major league debut on Friday: CF Denzel Clarke.

Swept for three straight series, the Athletics finally ended their losing streak at 11 with a 5-4 win over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday, May 25th.

Rookie first-baseman Nick Kurtz had started to find a stellar rhythm, tallying two hits and two walks before suffering a strained left hip flexor that led to pinch-runner Logan Davidson making his major league debut.
